Dye Sublimation Printing

Dye Sublimation Printing is a computer printing technique which uses heat to transfer dye onto materials such as a plastic, card, paper, or fabric. The proper name for the process has become known as dye-diffusion, though this technically-correct term has not supplanted the original name. Many consumer and professional dye-sublimation printers are designed and used for producing photographic prints, ID cards, clothing, and more.

Why Use Dye Sub Printing?

You might use this process to create beautiful full body prints for your garment where you want the entire surface to be printed. The sublimation ink is transferred into the fabric using a combination of heat and pressure. The ink is heat transferred from the printed paper onto your fabric by using a heat press. The ink changes from a solid to a gas (hence the term “sublimation”) and enters the polyester fibers. The polymers in the polyester bond when heated, which allows the graphics to quickly become permanently embedded into your materials. As a heated gas, the ink becomes fully infused into the fabric instead of just printed on the surface, resulting in long-lasting, high-quality products.  Dye Sub Printing doesn’t feel like an iron-on and it wears and washes well with no fading to the print like other printing processes might. You would consider this method for smaller runs as there is less setup time and cost.
